Job Openings at The Inlander CULTURE WRITER (emphasis on Food coverage) The Inlander is looking for an ambitious and creative Arts and Culture Writer (with a heavy emphasis on Food coverage) to join its award-winning editorial team. As the region’s thriving and healthy alternative weekly, our readers depend on us to seek out and tell stories that no one else is. The position will focus on lively and insightful feature writing about food, chefs and entrepreneurs, as well as the news of food with stories on new restaurants, rules that affect the business of owning and running a restaurant, etc. While we seek someone to help helm our food coverage, the storytelling opportunities on this culture beat are vast: literature, comedy, classical music, live theater, dance, fashion, regional history, international cultures, visual arts, spoken word, radio, entertainment, gaming and much, much more. A rich and vibrant arts scene is important to any city, but especially in Spokane and the Inland Northwest, which is home to more than 500,000 people. As a foundation to culture, the arts connect and bring people together by broaching new ideas and concepts, and creating a shared sense of community. This is key to the Inland Northwest, which encompasses not only the urban heart of Spokane but also stretches far beyond — from the North Idaho enclaves of Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene to the Palouse towns of Moscow and Pullman, as well as multiple universities (Gonzaga, Washington State University, University of Idaho and Eastern Washington University, to name a few). The perfect candidate is a skilled writer and hungry storyteller who understands that creativity, deep reporting and developing sources is vital to quality journalism. We want someone who is literate in food journalism and the arts, and bursting with ideas. Someone who is not only eager for large projects, but also geared up for weekly reporting on what’s happening locally and beyond. Finally, we are committed to truth and fairness, and understand the strong grounding that journalistic ethics provide. You must be as well. The writer will: Pitch and write complete stories on deadline that our readers will want to read. Have a knack for finding fresh, compelling and surprising stories. Help define and lead our food coverage. Develop and maintain relationships and sources within the Inland Northwest food, arts and culture community. Be able to juggle multiple tasks and duties in a dynamic environment. Pay tremendous attention to detail, admit mistakes and take responsibility. Be comfortable talking to people from all backgrounds and demographics. Treat all sides of an issue with fairness, respect and empathy. Have excellent news sense and good judgment. Be able to write all manner of stories — from short, newsy briefs to long, immersive narratives. Be curious, critical and compassionate. If you think you’re a fit, please send a cover letter, resume and several samples of your work to the Inlander ’s editor, Nicholas Deshais, at [email protected]. There is the potential for this to be a full- or part-time position, […]
